The following winter skin care tips can help you avoid the not-so-pretty reality of what winter can do to your skin. Annual winter temperatures at our beauty school in Austin, Texas don’t dip much lower than 42 ℉, but even minor winter weather can have a severe impact on your skin.

Why is my skin so dry every winter?

By the time winter arrives, the nose and forehead require more moisturizing cream than a calloused foot. Our hands get dry and cracked; and our heels won’t stop catching on the sheets. It’s not a pretty picture, but perhaps you can relate.

Dry skin is one of the most common reasons people search for winter skin care tips. When the air outside is cold and dry, like it is in the winter, it causes the moisture on your skin to evaporate faster. As a result, your skin doesn’t contain the same moisture content as usual. This causes your skin to feel dry and/or tight; it can also make your skin look flaky.

Don’t let winter weather hold your skin hostage! Here are some life-changing winter skin care tips we swear by.

1. Invest in a moisturizing cream or primer spray; apply before putting on your makeup

Nothing is worse than dry skin that causes your makeup to clump up and look like a flaky mess. Before applying any makeup to your face, use a moisturizing cream or a prep and prime moisturizing spray to hydrate skin and reduce the presence of flaky, dead skin.

2. Moisturize before bed

Before bed each night, generously slather on a deep moisturizing lotion for your hands, feet and other dry areas. For extremely dry feet, tie a bag full of lotion onto each foot and let them soak for a few hours, or all night long.

When washing your face before bed, apply a moisturizing night cream to deter flaky dry skin on your face.

“A moisturizer can alleviate skin dryness and irritation, and prevent their return… the efficacy of different moisturizers can be differentiated, based on their composition,” states a 2005 study published on PubMed.gov. For the best results, stick with a high-quality moisturizer that contains natural ingredients.

 3. Avoid scorching hot showers

Sure, they feel great when it’s ice-cold outside, but mega-hot showers dry out your skin like none other. Try taking lukewarm showers instead to keep essential oils intact, especially when washing your face.

4. Drink water all day long

It’s easy to forget to drink water in winter but your body still needs it. Water literally hydrates your skin from the inside out. So, don’t forget to sip on water all day long to keep your skin glowing instead of flaking.

5. Use a humidifier at night

Sleep with a humidifier near your bed to help replace moisture in the air and hydrate dry skin and chapped lips while you snooze.
