Your skin’s health is paramount not only for your self-confidence, but for your overall health, as well. Countless brands all claim to have an answer to smooth, glowing skin. So what is the best regiment? How do you know when it’s time to change a skincare routine?

Some important factors to keep in mind are your skin type, the season, and what area of your skin you want to address.

Your Skin Type

Before you consider a change in your skincare routine, you should consider which skin type you have:

• Normal
• Dry
• Oily
• Sensitive

If you are fortunate enough to have a normal skin type, you will not need products to address problems like acne or redness. If you have one of the other three skin types, you should be aware of the different problems each type tends to possess.

It is time to consider a change in skincare routine if you experience a change in your skin texture, notice any flaky patches, or your skin feels oilier than it did.

Different skincare products target different skin issues. It’s important to be aware of the skin type that each product is designed for. With oily skin, you don’t want to start using a product with heavy mineral oils that could cause your skin to break out.

Even oily skin needs a proper moisturizer to avoid redness caused by anti-acne medication. Sensitive skin, on the other hand, is more likely to react negatively to harsh cleansers. Be sure to choose gentle products to avoid irritation.

The Time of Year

Different seasons produce different air conditions and weather events. In the summer, you will sweat more and your skin will be affected by the sun, dust, and/or sand. In the winter, climate is drier with less dirt and dust. If seasonal changes cause your skin to feel or look different, it is likely you need to change skincare routines.

In the summer, when you should definitely be wearing sunscreen, you have to adjust your regular routine to the oil content in the lotion. In the winter, your skin tends to dry out, avoid washing your face with strong cleansers, in order not to dry out your skin even more.

Your Skin Goals

When looking for a change in your skincare routine, the reason might be as simple as wanting to try something new. Perhaps your current regiment is not producing the results you want. But before you stock up on new cleansers, toners, and lotions, sit down and think about what kind of skin goals you wish to achieve.

• Are you trying to tackle specific skin problems such as acne, scarring, or dryness?
• Are your current products too harsh and you want to try something more natural and gentle?
• Do you want to drastically improve the look and feel of your skin, or are you just looking to maintain your current skin condition?

Answering these questions will affect the type and strength of skincare routine that you decide upon. It will also help guide your research when you search for the best products for your skin.
