4 Things to Know About Barbershops & Their Growing Popularity

1. Texas Employs More Barbers than other US States

According the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of 2017 Texas employed the highest number of barbers with 3,380 registered barbers. Next in line was New York with 2,390 barbers.

As far as the highest concentration of jobs, Texas comes in second, right behind New Jersey. Although, some of the highest concentrations of barbers in any given area fall in the State of Texas, including Houston, as well as throughout Dallas, Plano, and Irving.

2. The Three Main Industries Barbers Work In

If you guessed “personal care services,” ding-ding—you are correct! The largest number of barber school graduates go on to work in barbershops and salons conducting personal care services. A smaller but still measurable percentage of barbers work in the following industries:

  • State Government (this does not include schools or hospitals)
  • Education industry including colleges, universities, and professional schools

3. It’s an Industry the Internet Can’t Compete With

While Internet-based men’s grooming supply companies like Dollar Shave Club axe out the need to go to the store for a new razor, it’s a little harder to get your hair cut through the Internet. Not to mention, most DIY attempts influenced by how-to videos on YouTube don’t go as planned. Hence, the longstanding power of the barber shop.

4. Look Out for More High-End Barbershops

The high-end luxury barbershop is gaining market share as more men flock to locations with added services and amenities that make going to the barber more of an experience.  For instance, Finley’s in Houston offers everything from lounges and TVs, to cold beverages and Instagram-worthy décor. In part, we can look towards the ‘hip’ lifestyle fueled by social media posts, as well as the idea that barbershops embody masculinity.  Plus, for those who love feelings of nostalgia, barbershops are the perfect place to go.
